Nobody gives a quote like "anonymous Tory MP" does.

Is Boris Johnson likely to stay on as MP until election or possibly step down triggering a by-election?  His seat was already a marginal even before poll tanking and Labour would almost certainly pick it up so wondering if will stay on.

The funny thing politically is that everything is so bad and only going to get worse so there really isn’t anyway out of this that leaves Truss with a viable political project.

A couple of other selected highlights from the 1922:

One MP has been named as attacking Truss during the meeting: Robert Halfon, who chairs the education select committee, told Truss she had "trashed the last 10 years" of the Conservative economic record, according to one colleague.

I remember when Johnson addressed the 1922 after several rounds of partygate, and while the mood was dire, there were always some MPs who'd come out with a spring in their step, concerns assuaged - and always a few journalists briefing that the mood within the party had rallied.

In contrast, this just sounds dire.

BTW West Dorset is a mistake on the Election Maps UNS projection from that "Blue Wall" poll: it got swapped with Wimbledon.  Totnes and Tunbridge Wells are real though.  (Well, as real as UNS projections based on polls in a weird selection of seats get.)

Stephen Hammond (the MP for the ultra marginal Tory-Lib Dem seat of Wimbledon, not to be confused with Philip Hammond, May’s former Chancellor), has broken cover as the first Tory MP to openly call for Trussonomics to be scrapped:

Hammond is one of a handful of survivors from the 21 MPs who had the whip removed by Johnson in September 2019, so does have some history as a rebel.

I think he'd probably have already quit if that was his plan, and of course there are suggestions that he's hoping to make a comeback as PM.  I suppose there's always a chance that some job offer might tempt him out, though, and there's also still the possibility of a recall petition.

There was a rumour that he was going to try to move seats by standing in the Mid Bedfordshire by-election caused by Nadine Dorries's rumoured move to the Lords.  But that would always have been a bizarre and risky thing to do, and on current polling it would just be a question of which of Labour and the Lib Dems would take the seat.

Presumably the ones with 20,000-vote majorities are agitating in fear of losing their seats.

Halfon of course wanted to rename the Conservatives the Workers’ Party and change their logo to a ladder. MP for Harlow in Essex with a majority of 14,000 votes/over 30 points but on current polls and past results in new towns like the one he represents a certain defeat in these conditions.

My MP. He’s a quiet, low-profile party loyalist by nature, but he’s also not stupid and aware of the political realities he faces in his seat; that said, that he’s speaking up at all shows how serious things are. That said, I don’t think there’s really anything he can do to save himself now, considering he was already heavy favourite to lose before all this, having only won by 600 votes in 2019.

Tories hold Norwich North? Dave Rowntree just can't catch a break. Should've played in a better band and stayed out of the Cool Britannia astroturf circlejerk that everyone's soured on since imo tbh

This would almost certainly not be borne out in practise. But the fact that members of the cabinet have reached the point where they’ve decided it’s appropriate to brief the ITV Political Editor that Truss has likely lost the confidence of the House, right before he goes on air, really shows you how much worse things have become today.

After the scare they got from Theresa May, they should have at least vetted for charisma. Ridiculous.

Ah yes, the economic record of poor quality jobs and the slowest productivity growth since WW2.

Exactly, why MPs who have their own jobs on the line let her be a candidate for PM is one of the stupidest decisions in recent British political history.

From this evening's audience:
Truss: Your majesty, it's lovely to see you again.
Charles: So you've come back again
Truss: It's a great pleasure.
Charles: Dear oh dear. Anyway...

I wonder if Truss has a humiliation kink. From weeks of record low poll ratings, to her cabinet nearing the point of revolt, to being openly dissed by the King in front of the cameras, how has she not stepped down yet? Most people probably would’ve called it quits by now.

I will say, you have to at least admire her mental fortitude.

Whatever her deal is - it has to be exhausting to be so unpopular that even the Windsors think it’s safe to take potshots at you.
