Most likely Voinovich, unless there's another Democratic sweep, which is unlikely.

Well...being a resident of OH-17 (yay Youngstown!), I'm a bit biased toward Tim Ryan, although I've campaigned for both candidates--Ryan since he first went to the state senate, then for congress from '02 forward. Voinovich I've campaigned and voted for in his last two senate races and his last for governor. I know...I'm a baaaaad Democrat.

If it comes to a matchup with them, I will vote for Ryan. But I think Voinovich would probably win.

Close.  I'd vote Ryan, though I have always liked Voinovich.  He was a fine mayor and Governor.  And as Republicans go, he has been relatively measured and thoughtful.  I don't consider him one of the great minds of the Senate, but I respect him.

Do you expect Ryan to be the challenger?

The local buzz around Youngstown is that Ryan is "exploring the possibility" of running. No official word from him or his staff of course. If Ryan does run, I will be a very enthusiastic volunteer for that campaign.

Its not as if the Dems really have a chance of losing OH-17 if Ryan goes to the Senate.

The only thing that would stop him for running for Senate is his spot on the Approprations Committee. He would like to one day be Chairman so he can bring home the big bacon to Youngstown and eastern Ohio.
