On another note, Bennet and Gillibrand are appointees winning election. Isn't that pretty rare?

In the current Senate, Akaka, Murkowski, Menendez, Barrasso and Wicker were all appointees who went on to win elections in their own right.  But it's more common for appointees to keep the seat warm without ever intending to run for it (e.g. Paul Kirk, Kaufman, LeMieux, Goodwin).
