Not particularly. I think that there are a number of other countries I could move to where I'd be just as happy if not happier. Sure, there is plenty of portions of American history that are worth being proud about (scattered amongst a number of shameful portions as well...) I stay in this country because of my family and friends and those roots (and if I am being honest because it would be tough to watch American sports in Europe). Otherwise, I wouldn't really mind moving to one of a number of European countries with a similar standard of living.

There is a good amount to like about this country. But we aren't that special. There are a number of other countries that are just as good.

Why be proud of something that I didn't have to work for?

Not really no

I just inherited my citizenship but I don't have much to do with America, I wasn't born there nor did I grow up there and I don't have any intention of moving there if I'm not forced to

If anything, it's a burden that's caused me a lot of difficulties with frankly very little in return, and can always be used against me

I'll be struggling to find reasons to be if we lurch any closer to the Hungarian model of illiberal democracy.

I'll be struggling to find reasons to be if we lurch any closer to the Hungarian model of illiberal democracy.
Hungarian model of illiberal democracy came about from 70 years of mostly misfortune as well as the enormous failure of the Socialists in government.
In Hungary the trauma of Trainon is still alive, and indeed the best days for the country, in relative terms when compared to its neighbors, will for a long time be the ones before 1919.
That Fidesz has been so successful should shock no one. Most of the opposition is a joke, the tragic history of the country darkens the background, and the failures of people like Gyurszany leave Fidesz as the only good option in the eyes of many of the population. Orban is a cocktail of competent and evil, and he knows what his audience wants. Only now is the opposition starting to look credible again.

America has basically little to nothing in common with Hungary in this department; it lost basically no wars in a conclusive manner, unlike Hungary, that ended up on the losing side of both world wars and was vassalized by the Soviet Union for 4 decades.

great thread to let the rebel crowd work on their edge.  Flex you lil' rebels, flex.  I'm a little disapointed in some of the responses though, come on Craney, you can do better than that.  Maybe come back again after you'd had a nap and try again?

You almost seem to be insinuating that unequivocal pride in being American must involve gauging us against other countries…?   I flatly reject that.  Anyway, my answer is an emphatic yes.  Very lucky to have been born here, as well.
