300k is way to expensive, you can get a house in Detroit for way cheaper.
Actually, Australia is the strange country on this particular issue....
Yeah America is cheap (outside of a few particular areas), but then the quality of houses is usually rather poor. Take a good house (i.e. one made of stone), and the American prices wouldn't be a whole lot less than what you'd pay in Germany, I think. A decent house can be had for around 250,000-300,000 € in my area.
