The reason why is obvious:

Things haven't been this good since the days of Jeff Garcia.

Alex Smith is average. His problem is that his coaching has been almost uniformly awful. He was good the one year they had Norv Turner.

I'm getting more excited about the 49ers than I ever thought I could and certainly far more than I've ever wanted to.

13-3 is a completely reasonable prediction, which is incredible.

5) Yes, the 49ers win ugly, but they are winning, even if its over another bad team in Washington.  Basically, the only games the 49ers play that they can lose are the Giants and Steelers at home, and the Ravens on the road.  The rest is AFC West hell.  I wouldn't be surprised if they end up the #2 seed when all is done, actually, with that schedule.

I expect that they will. Who else could?

The Eagles are losing thanks to a mixture of bad luck and not actually being that good to begin with, not because they aren't "a Philadelphia team". fezzy's posts sound like they came straight from WIP.

It's hilarious to see a reference to our beloved station from someone outside of the area.  Smiley

Well, you can't have even a cursory knowledge of sports in Philadelphia without being familiar with it.

It looks like the 49ers have just decided as a team that they're not interested in making an effort to score touchdowns.

Question about the NFL:

Does anyone know why the NFL does not have promoted teams or relegated teams after each season like in football leagues ?

It seems the NFL consists of all the same teams each year. Any reason for that ?

Who would be promoted? There are no other teams; the only other significant football competition belongs the NCAA, and its teams are amateur, not professional. Occasionally new teams will be created (the last was the Houston Texans in 2003), but there are no plans for any further expansion. The last team to be removed from the league was the Dallas Texans (no relation to the current Houston team), who were folded in 1952.

It'll be disappointing when the 49ers inevitably lose at Lambeau, but then they usually lose in the NFC Championship Game. It would be nice enough to get there.

Now that Pittsburgh has six, the zero is the only thing left to cling to.

A lot of that comes from the way that teams have just stopped trying to run the ball against the 49ers; naturally, if they're throwing every down, they'll get more yards that way. The 49ers are the ninth-best team in the league in yards per pass attempt. I wouldn't worry about that.

I wanted to see how the 49ers' defense compares to the 2000 Ravens, so I looked it up. That team gave up 10.5 points a game. How?

I just find it strange that exactly the US, the country of competition, does not have such a system while the "Socialist" Europe does have it ... Tongue

In Europe, if you don't like your league, you can force the sport's governing body to let you into the top league. In America, you have to start your own league, and if it's good enough (like the AFL) it can succeed.

except our leagues receive special exemption from antitrust law so... best of luck

Much like how in America large corporations aren't really subject to the law.

John Skelton is so bad. It looks like all the 49ers are trying to do is have David Akers set the single-season field goal record (which he'll shatter, since he only needs four more to tie).

He's also going to shatter the franchise record for points in a season. Most likely break the NFL record too.

He needs three more points to pass Jerry Rice, but he won't beat LaDainian Tomlinson's all-time record. He's still 50 points away from that. LaDainian Tomlinson's 2006 was unreal.

I'm going to miss Candlestick when they tear it down.

When the lights go down in the city.
And the moon shines on the bay.

Sun, not moon. After they played that song during the 2010 World Series, I'm not ever going to forget the words.

David Akers is pretty good at the whole field goal kicking thing.
