Take your pick between these two mighty 1980s leaders who were and remain polarizing.

What are your thoughts on the 1977 Pakistani coup? Do you think you would’ve supported Zia-ul-Haq?

It was very bad but:

1. Reagan Wasn’t president then

2. To fund the Mujadheen , the US did need help from Pakistan and I do think funding the Mujadheen was the right decision.

I’ve heard some say Zia-al-Huq prevented a Soviet invasion of the Indian subcontinent. That would be a pretty substantial accomplishment if that was the case.

What? The Soviet Union had little desire to invade Afghanistan, let alone the Indian subcontinent. They did the former to "stabilize" the country--by which I mean they went in, shot the insane, incompetent, and rogue (from Moscow's POV) Communist dictator*, and replaced him with a less insane, still-incompetent, but more pliant Communist dictator from the rival faction in Afghanistan's Communist party.

*who had himself out-maneuvered his predecessor and mentor before having him murdered a mere two months before the Soviet invasion.
