I'm not sure what to think about that, but it doesn't come off as an endorsement of Hitler to me. People smiling in front of Auschwitz is a lot more offensive.

It is pretty difficult to find someone to be a candidate that has never said something that could be interpreted in a bad light by oppositions party members with an agenda.

It's possible, but very, very, very unlikely, this seat has all of Buncombe County in it, while the old seat, cut up Buncombe, partly to draw out then-Representative Heath Shuler (D). This iteration of the seat is actually 10 points to the left of the old version, it's still Trump+17, but given we've seen polls with Biden winning by 10-15, and the fact that Cawthorne seems quite weak, this could be a perfect storm. But Davis is quite a weak candidate, so honestly I'd say this is Safe R, because you need a perfect storm and then some to flip it, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities, and the DCCC/House Majority PAC have far, far better targets this year anyways, including 3-4 in NC (NC-02, NC-06, and NC-08, and maybe NC-09). But, yeah this is probably a bridge too far, but it could be close-ish, the best way to say this is Safe R, much. much closer to Likely than Titanium/Tungsten.

Because their base is mostly angry white men, and such people are quite receptive to key components of Nazism.

There's a lot of stuff in his story that doesn't add up, including passing himself off as a would-be midshipman at Annapolis.

Reddit

Quote
I grew up with Madison -- we all called him "Maddie" until he started taking himself too seriously around 2016/2017. I played football with his older brother Zach on the Asheville Saints homeschool football team, and I was also homeschooled and ran in the same homeschool circles (largely centered around both Biltmore Baptist and Scott Clifton's neo-confederate, libertarian bullsh**t 'homeschool partners' classes in the Arden/HVL area). Thankfully I escaped that culture, and I count myself very lucky to have been able to do so.

When the 'accident' happened, Maddie and his family didn't just 'leave out the timing details' about the naval academy rejection. They were all very explicit in saying that he had been accepted and was all set to go (on a 'full-ride' to a tuition free school...), but the 'accident' made that impossible. This, again, was stated explicitly by Maddie and his family in the months/years after the car wreck. A big component of the 'Prayers for Madison 2014' movement (mostly run by Biltmore Baptist) was talking up how unfortunate it was that Maddie was not going to be able to 'serve his country' as an 'officer' because the car wreck stole his precious scholarship and future from him.

I say all that to say, details weren't merely left out. Outright lies were told for months and years after the wreck, and Maddie is still capitalizing on that today with his militaristic image, the molon-labe-emblazoned bulletproof vests, calling himself a 'fighter,' and coming about as close to stealing valor as you can.  that guy, and  his rich family, too, for propping him up like this.

Having an interest in ww2 history is not a crime. Cawthorn still seems like a Chaddy d!ck though.

Cawthorn straight up calls Hitler "a supreme evil" FFS. This story is 100% fake news.

Even if he is not a Nazi, calling Hitler "The Fuhrer" and saying that visiting his vacation house was on your "bucket list" is enough to make anyone recoil.

There's no law saying you can't go and visit where Hitler's vacation home was. But taking a picture of it, sharing it on your social media platforms, smiling in front of it, and calling Hitler "The Fuhrer" is probably a bad idea. He may not have meant to make it look like he was endorsing Hitler - and I personally don't think he was - but he should have realized what the optics of this looked like. I'm a firm believer in watching what you say or do, and not doing anything your enemies can exploit is a big part of that. Did he mean for it to look like he was endorsing Hitler? No. But when the modern day Republican Party has been accused of racial hatred and catering to conspiracy theorists and pushing stereotypes, this probably was not the brightest move.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. And I never said what he did wasn't stupid - it was completely moronic.

Taking political opponents out of context to pretend they said something they didn't is far older than cancel culture. Remember soundbite culture? I sure do.

Tell that to Poland, they still haven’t taken down the cross at Auschwitz even after it led to multiple modern day pogroms after the Jewish community called for the removal of that appalling and deeply offensive display.  Your point is well-taken, but I think you’re giving Germany (and really Europe in general) too much credit.
