For the most part, there aren't a lot of big cities that I'd be entirely unwilling to visit in the US for safety reasons.  But, there are certainly neighborhoods that I'd be hesitant to spend much time in in many cities.

I wouldn't say I'd avoid any of those places for crime reasons (if anything I'd avoid them because they're in the USA Tongue). My parents, on the other hand, would not be too pleased with most of those prospects.

I await BRTD's vigorous defence of Birmingham's music scene in this thread.

I've spent a decent amount of time in nearly every city on that list, excepting Portland, Seattle, and Gary.

The reality is that most violent crime in the US is gang and/or drug related. Not to say random crime NEVER happens, but it's rare.

To be fair, most people visiting these cities would go to tourist areas which are probably safe

other than Gary and E.St Louis, most of these cities are safe in the vast majority of the city, and even in Gary and ESTL, you're going to fine most of the time

East St Louis maybe? Then again I’d have absolutely no reason to go there in the first place. It’s Cairo Illinois without the charm.

"Crime concerns" aren't a factor when determining whether to visit somewhere.

The most popular choices are coincident with mine.

I frequently go to Chicago and Saint Louis and have never had an issue in either. There are parts of both cities I generally avoid. East Saint Louis is genuinely scary. Gary isn’t a place I’d spend time in but I have been there. It’s mildly better than 10 years ago but still awful. It does have the miller beach area which is fine. Downtown Detroit feels safe to walk around, I haven’t visited other parts of the city.

Just in case anyone thinks I'm being a hack by saying I wouldn't avoid any of these cities because of crime, there are some cities I would avoid visiting for safety reasons: Rafah, Gaza; Jalalabad, Afghanistan; al-Atarib, Syria; Krasnohorivka, Ukraine; el-Fasher, Sudan... and many, many others!

But I hear Port-au-Prince is just lovely this time of year!

I’d be shocked if Port-au-Prince’s homicide rate is higher than East St. Louis’ to be honest.

Also, didn’t you say-

The topic was asking about American cities, so my comment applied to traveling around the US.

I recognize that we are a nation of gun-toting sociopaths with an insanely high level of mass shootings, but (a) that can happen in any corner of this country, and (b) the probability of getting shot while out and about anywhere is still statistically negligible.

This is true of Haiti as well.

Probably only Gary and East St Louis, less because of the crime but because there's exactly Jack all to do there to warrant any crime risk, or even just the gas money.

Even then, say if I were visiting friends in St Louis and they suggested we go out to the couple casinos in East St Louis for the evening, I'd say sure.

Honduras has a lower homicide rate than most cities on this list. Would you feel safe going to
Honduras?

"Crime concerns" aren't a factor when determining whether to visit somewhere.

Over the weekend I met a man from Vancouver who spent years resisting visiting in laws in Detroit because he was under the impression it was a very dangerous city. He visited recently and loved it. I was overjoyed to hear that he thought his original negative perception was wrong and that he found the people very friendly and the general area very safe!

Just Oakland, and this is from years and years of seeing the city decline in real-time...though I still prefer its pre-remodel LaGaurdia-esque airport to SFO's JFK or San Jose's Newark, and I can't argue against Fenton's much either.

The Oakland murder rate dropped a lot under mayor Ron Dellums, but the media didn't like him so he didn't run for re-election.

I grew up in a rural town of 6,000 that has murder rates that rival most of these. One weekend we had three people shot dead. Most of these are safer by comparison.

It does not depend necessarily on the city.

It really depends on the people you are staying with and their lifestyle.

To answer the question directly, the most dangerous city in the US at the moment would be:

Lincoln, Nebraska

With the rates of car killings in rural areas, I am nervous to visit many violence-afflicted rural regions of the country that enable extremely unsafe conditions and hardly seek to penalize drivers for killing pedestrians/riders in other vehicles.

I don't believe the average person would be at a particularly high risk of danger in the cities you mentioned at a normal time of day.
