I'm glad I tempered my expectations for this race after the Tox poll gave me an ulcer. In spite of this, that poll being an outlier after all and me actually nailing my updated Youngkin+2 prediction were the only minor silver linings. It was an excruciating night otherwise, like every election since 2014 (2027 and 2019 excepted).

I want to be sedated.

See? I f***ing knew we couldn't trust suburbanites in general. They hate Trump, but only him personally. They're like relapsing addicts with the GOP without him.

So if Democrats can't rely on them, or even voters of color anymore, what does a winning Democratic coalition even look like? Let's face it, we're going the way of the British Labour Party but we can't even partly blame Scotland like they can.

Democrats never want to admit this, but we do in fact need the old New Deal coalition if we want to be as competitive in local and congressional races as we are for the presidency. In safe blue districts/states, run as liberal a candidate as you can find. But down south, Democrats have his really stupid idea of running of socially liberal fiscally moderate-conservative corporatists which NOBODY LIKES OUTSIDE OF THE WEALTHY NORTHEAST. Run socially conservative populists.... like legitimate populists... run a bunch of tough Teddy Roosevelt clones who a more traditional electorate can trust to represent them on cultural issues and fight for their best interests on economic issues. I'm tired of seeing (insert generic effeminate beta male neoliberal here) lose year after year. When they do manage to squeak out a victory, they always sell their voters out to corporate donors.

I’m not against this (as a gay) just run candidates who are mum on gay marriage and abortion if they’ll get behind labor and health reform.

Looks like no more Confederate statues (under state jurisdiction) in Virginia are going to be taken down until the end of this administration:

Youngkin appoints Confederate statue defender to historic resources board

VIRGINIA: WHAT WERE YOU EFFING THINKING!?

He was just so moderate wearing a vest jacket Purple heart

The Dem state senator drawn into a narrow Trump district in the mountains (he's not a Blue Dog, it was formerly gerrymandered to connect college towns) just announced his retirement today.  Likely R+1, which would mean back to 21D/19R, but there's also a West Richmond seat Dems are about equally likely to flip, so sticking with my prediction that it stays 22D/18R

This ends the prospect of Dems becoming veto-proof in a wave.

I assume you mean Creigh Deeds? But I don’t see any news about him retiring?

New ad dropped by Younkin's super PAC, hinting at a presidential run to "pursue Reagan's legacy".

Do Resign-to-Run rules apply to VA?

Supposedly this ad is "only" for Youngkin's PAC which is focusing on the November legislative elections. But it's blatantly a presidential campaign ad.

Odd timing given how he very recently said he won't be running.

It just occurred to me how Glenn Youngkin is really the only new Republican Governor or Senator from the Biden era that seems like a plausible presidential candidate. 2022 really stifled a lot of the would-be future candidates. Maybe JD Vance, but he’s a mess.

JD Vance would be eviscerated in a national campaign

We have a legit DINO in Fairfax County, Petersen going down is a bigger deal than Morrissey.

Morrissey is a child molester, so no it’s not a bigger deal Petersen’s gone.

I'm excited to see how Danica Roem does in her state senate race, how blue is SD-30? She's always been one of my favorites ever since her first run.

According to VPAP (great website every state should have one) the district hasn’t vote for a Republican since before 2016, even voted for McAuliffe in 2021 by about 4 points. So not a complete safe seat but Roem’s record for constituent service will serve her greatly. She is definitely favored.

The Youngkin 15-week ban proposal is revealingly stupid (not necessarily about him, moreso about the party's approach to abortion in general) because it assumes that a majority of voters want a compromise on abortion to begin with.

Not even so much that but most people know republicans aren’t gonna stop with 15 weeks, 12 weeks, or even 6 weeks. Their goal is a complete national ban.

This is not going to hurt her in a post-Me Too era. Republicans are just going to look like assholes for leaking the images.

Isn’t it also, ya know, illegal. I feel like this falls under revenge porn.

Not nonsensical at all. For one, it makes no distinction between nudity and pornography. It also broadly criminalizes videos or images "created by any means whatsoever," which makes no distinction between stolen footage or illegal voyeuristic footage and embarrassing footage that is already out there or that exists but is not pornographic in any way. It also makes no distinction between private citizens and public figures. I don't understand the part about being "licensed or authorized to disseminate" but that seems questionable too. I doubt that even the most prudish Supreme Court would tolerate this law.

I guess the "intent to intimidate" is what arguably makes it justifiable, but that still seems dubious when it comes to public figures.

1) why the heck should there be a distinction between public figures or not.

2) it doesn’t broadly criminalize at all. Only those “with the intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate, maliciously disseminates”. If you’re a pornstar or running an only fans this doesn’t apply to you. Porn is still legal in Virginia

A lot of this boils down to are people comfortable with a woman expressing her sexuality. For a lot of people in this thread comparing a consensual act in a heterosexual marriage to a man cheating on his wife or a woman sleeping with her subordinate the answer seems to be no.

The Democratic cope in this thread is nuts.  She should drop out immediately and if she doesn’t then she’ll blow the race.  Simple as that.

That’s patently ridiculous for no other reason is there’s less then two months till the election. Even if this was something worth dropping out over that window has passed.

6 in 10 Americans report viewing porn... This helps Gibson

“Many Americans report enjoying alcohol, so I believe drunkenly crashing his car into the tree will help the incumbent.”

Recording sex with you husband is morally the same as drunk driving

Jesus Christ what a take

No, this can’t be true! Young people have abandoned the Democratic Party because Genocide Joe supports Israel!

A lot of people my age are pragmatic. They don’t like Biden, but they rightfully revile republicans. When you’re about to be run over by a train and the only way to get out of the way is to jump into thorns, you’re gonna hesitate but you know what you have to do.

Interesting that Northam’s endorsement is now coveted. Spanberger herself called for his resignation (as did almost every VA Democrat):

Northam's deeds made everyone forget this embarrassing incident. He delivered on most Democratic priorities despite all the hand-wringing be leftists that he was a DINO and would stymie the liberals in the legislature.

Actually, the push to oust Northam got stalled once it became apparent that the next two people in line after him also had baggage of their own, and the third person in line after that was a Republican at the time.

Yea, Herring was basically the same as Northam and Fairfax was a literal rapist
