A very subjective topic, but lets compare and rank every Democratic/Republican President and presidential candidate since 1960 on how "left" or "right" they were in comparison to their fellow partymen.

Democrats (liberal to conservative):

McGovern
Mondale
Carter
Johnson
Obama
Dukakis
Kerry
Humphrey
Gore
Clinton
Kennedy

Republicans (conservative to liberal):

Goldwater
Reagan
Dole
Bush 43
Nixon '69-'74
Bush 41
Nixon '60
McCain
Ford

By 1968, Nixon had become more socially conservative what with his anti-hippie "silent majority".  Eight years earlier, Nixon was more socially moderate/liberal, had about the same domestic agenda (moderate) and foreign policy (pragmatist).  Interestingly, Kennedy ran to the "right" of Nixon on foreign policy in 1960.
