People think Harris won the exchange with Biden?

"I didn't become a prosecutor" was such a great line. Cop Kamala will never cut into Biden's support among blacks.

A prosecutor has a better chance of reforming the system from the inside more than a public defender. Public defenders in many cases don't even care about their clients because they have so many. And honestly it seemed condescending because it was as if he was saying he gave up a better career to play savior to urban blacks.

Can I get two hours of my life back? This night has done nothing to change my opinion of any of these candidates.

It reminded me that every single one of them is a better human being, and a better President, than the person chosen by Republican voters.

Even Williamson, who scat singed her way through the debate?

Every time Marianne Williamson spoke I literally died.

I pray to Xenu she stays in until the convention. The last time my jaw dropped that hard was probably the first debate with Trump in it in 2015.

de Blasio didn't lose night one. He didn't win (not by a long shot), but he didn't lose either.
He came off as an angry, Marxist jerk with a penchant for interruption.

Lol

"There's plenty of money in the world; it's just in the wrong hands" sounds pretty extreme.

It may be extreme for our current era, but not "Marxist" in any sense of the word.

Williamson’s invoking of “John Kennedy” reminded me of Tatum O’Neal’s character in Paper Moon always referring to “Frank D. Roosevelt.”

I am frankly baffled that anyone legitimately believes that Williamson’s performance will garner her any support beyond her existing cult following. She gave zero substantive commentary on policy and was terribly scatterbrained (talking about the moon, the power of imagination, children in New Zealand, etc.). I get that eccentricity can draw some viewers in, but...
I appreciated her sickness care line. We have a lot to do with improving the health of people in this country through cutting farm subsidies, stopping food stamp use for unhealthy food, incentivizing excersize and not smoking to receive public health coverage, and stricter chemical regulation.

His Che Guevara quote today also may have played into the comment.

I think the problem is that very few voters will say that that was their main takeaway from her debate performance.

I find it ironic how Hillary was pegged for the “deplorable” comment yet so many here inadvertently admit to feeling that way by the argument that Kamala’s culture stances make her toxic in the general election. Like you’re telling me that for white midwest/middle America Trump calling a group of white nationalist terrorists “fine people” is ok but Kamala hitting Biden on busing is a step to far?

Harris dominated tonight and won the debate. She'll have to defend her record sooner than later though.

Bernie really is on the same footing and didn't do anything to hurt or help him. This format didn't do him any favors.

Marianne had a somewhat coming out party and made a name for herself tonight. Didn't like how they cut her off at times she was speaking sense.

Buttgieg, Swallwell, Gillibrand, Hickenlooper and Yang were absolutely forgettable.

Biden was the biggest loser and blundered miserably when Kamala revealed that she was apart of the busing he wanted to get rid of. Gonna be terrible to damage control this with black outreach...

Well &/@/, Marianne just went from the bottom of the barrel to the top 10 for me. She actually did give an ok performance with a few zingers. Meanwhile Yang just didn’t meet up with expectations, but didn’t totally collapse.

You all are terrible at analysis, FFS; sometimes I wonder if our masse of information available can’t lead us to a better future, and then I see that it’s because the consumers are mostly buffoons. The takes in this thread.

A common pattern of both nights- last night Castro stood out with an ethnic identity based attack on a white candidate, and tonight even more so Harris. This works in a Dem primary but in the long run it'll only serve to further polarize the parties along ethnic lines. Yikes.

My opinion on the performances from both nights, categorized into four groups

Noticably bolstered their candidacy: Harris, Castro

Had a small but positive effect: Warren, Booker, Gillibrand, de Blasio, Gabbard, Klobuchar, Swalwell, Buttigieg

No net effect: Sanders, Bennet, Hickenlooper, Yang, Inslee, Delaney

Hurt their candidacy: Williamson, Biden, Ryan, O’Rourke

Hot takes:

Biden really didn't as poorly as those with the Biden-hate boner would make it seem but he lost the exchange with Kamala pretty decisively. Despite being technically correct about the state vs. federal jurisdiction he seemed to forget the larger point of the argument and ended up looking like the defender of state's rights.

Kamala did fine but I wasn't terribly impressed.

I really don't think Swalwell and Hickenlooper did as poorly as many here are acting although they didn't necessarily do well and they have no path going forward either way.

Super surprised by the mild Bennet hype? I've always liked Senator Bennet but I don't really know what positives people were seeing in his performance tonight.

I already forgot Gillibrand went tonight.

Pete's shout out to rural America combating climate change, while vague, is a good rhetorical pivot. I've seen some other candidates do this (I think Hickenlooper has too?) and I think it has some mileage at least for a primary campaign. I also found his answer to the South Bend strife pretty good (although probably not enough).
