Your statement was in the present tense.

It may have been true at the time he wrote it.  For example, I can write "The Carolina Hurricanes are the current Stanely Cup Champions."  This is currently true.  However, in about 5 or 6 years, they might not win the Cup agian and it will no longer be true.  This does not change the fact that it was true at the time of my original statement.
