This North Carolina 1990 Senate race showed gay- and race-baiter Jesse Helms in a surprisingly close election against Harvey Gantt, a black man who favored racial quotas.  I saved the ad once, but unfortunately can't find the original website source (it was a PBS political ads special).  Here's the ad that won the election for Helms:

I hate affirmative action, but I'm not too concerned about it.  I've won every job I've ever applied for.  No quota can trump MY qualifications.

they ran against each other in 1996 too.

a little fun fact:  in 1990, a young prosecuter advanced to the run off against harvey gantt in the democrat primary.  his name?  mike easley.

by the way, i voted in the 1996 contest.  ill keep my choice a secret. Smiley
