With moderates in serious trouble, Illinois representative John Anderson was floated in the media as a potential candidate. Anderson did not have the clout to make the race tighter, but in a Republican candidates debate scored many points against Crane and brought issues to the spotlight, Anderson crept up as Crane began to look more vulnerable. Anderson would neither confirm nor deny if he would run as an independent should he loose the primary, but he continued to advance in the polls. This unnerved Ford, who had been following the campaign who was now questioning Anderson's loyalty.
