only chance would be if he loses with an aura of illegitimacy around the whole process (a la Gore 2000; which is why Gore remained viable through '04 and '08).  in reality, no, of course not.

No, he would do just what Carter and Bush Sr., position himself as an elder statesmen. Rather a President gets one or two terms, they generally do the same thing.

No, he'd be too tarnished. Democratic activists are already disappointed in him, and Republicans hate him with a passion. If he loses, his presidency will be remembered as an unfulfilled dream. He'd probably lay low for quite a while, like Bush is doing.

That's the only way I could see it possible, if inherently unlikely. If he were to win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote, he could try and come back like Cleveland. But I still think he'd retire.

If he loses, I'm cool with him saying, "Take this ing job and shove it up your ass!", and then retiring to a comfortable life of making millions on speeches while seeing his daughters grow up. Perhaps someday a future Democratic president will nominate him as a Supreme Court justice.

The new regime will force him into exile most likely. Maybe once some semblance of democracy is restored in 30-40 years he'll return as a sort of elderly Nelson Mandela figure.

This never happens.  Not in modern day.  But if he does lose, I don't see him going in the dark at all.  He'll be more in the spotlight than Clinton.

I can picture him taking the Carter post-presidency route. Helping in humanitarian efforts, various public services, Democratic speeches, etc.

If he loses before the economy is restored, I do not believe he will end up as popular as Clinton is now, post-presidency.

I think he'll write books and avoid people as much as possible as he doesn't seem to actually like them that much.
