I'm done with finals and living in my childhood home for the summer. Now to look for a summer job...hopefully I hear back soon.

Pro tip if you're ever on a date with someone whose first language isn't English and who didn't grow up in the Anglosphere: the "why is 6 afraid of 7?" joke absolutely kills.

I actually know someone who has a relative still alive who was born when Taft (!) was President of the USA.

I have just learnt (with some delay) that she has since died. She lived to be one of the very oldest people in the country. RIP.

Been a good week in the Northeast. Saw five friends and six new states (and one new province!). Spent nights in VT, ME, MA, and, most recently, Upstate NY. Headed back to Michigan today. This'll probably be my last trip until I get my final job offer and am getting ready to move out to California.

Leaving for Italy two weeks from today!

But, I had a weird question.  I was looking at average temperatures for Italy, and I noticed that Rome overall has very similar temperatures to Nashville.  However, there's one time of year where Nashville is dramatically warmer- April through June.  Do any weather nerds on here know why somewhere like Italy would be much slower to transition from spring to summer than somewhere like Tennessee- even if its summers are ultimately close to the same temperature by August?  September and October are also a bit warmer in Tennessee, while winters are a bit warmer in Rome.

Not complaining that it probably won't be 90 degrees when I'm in Italy, but I'm kind of curious why not.

I mean, Italy is further north, no?

Oh, absolutely.  Italy is warmer than it "should" be based on latitude, but my question was more about why there's a difference one time of year in particular.

Italy certainly has a smaller temperature gradient (and higher average temperatures at the same latitudes) than the Eastern USA because of the Gulf Stream and because it sits in the middle of an almost enclosed body of water; when you combine that with picking an American city significantly but not too much south of the Italian city you're comparing it to, funky results are to be expected. A nice comparison would be Rome and Chicago, since the two cities have shockingly identical latitudes. With that said I think what you're really getting at is that temperatures peak a bit earlier in the summer over there compared to here, which unfortunately I don't know the explanation for.

The other reason it probably won't be 90 degrees Fahrenheit when you're in Italy is that temperatures here tend to have much smaller short-term variation and anomalies (see point about Gulf Stream and sea mitigation) - as you'll have seen January is generally warmer in Rome but the record high January temperature is much higher in Nashville.

Yesterday I was casually walking by the harbour and ended up finding myself within a few metres of Matteo Salvini, who was in an open-air bar presenting his new book - lol - in front of a small crowd. Earlier in the day I also came across MEP Brando Benifei in the street and (although I only realized later) I was in the same room as government minister Nello Musumeci for a while. What a day...

I would've saluted him.

Just had a dream about my older self to younger self, my mom was amazing what happens when she dies to my life. Proof that just one person can change your life in a heartbeat

I prefer the suggestion of a friend who told me I should have yelled at him that he betrayed the Padanian cause.

That's why there has to be a soul, you can go back in time in your dreams, we just haven't been able to figure it out yet in the present.  Your soul travels when you are sleeping.

That's why it can be reincarnation but it just hasn't been proven

Pay increase request was approved for a job I should be starting soon. Still waiting to hear about the time off increase. Only after that's done and I do my background check do I get a start date.

Time off increase request approved. Gotta clarify some details and fill out some docs before I get a start date.

US Travel and Residence - April 2023-Present

30% Blue: Drove to/through

50% Blue: One stay of multiple nights or multiple one night stays
70% Blue: Multiple multi-night stays

Over the course of 13 months I drove across the American West multiple times, drove to and touched both oceans, was present in every state west of the Mississippi (and made sure to, at a minimum, touch the ground in each), and spent a night in every Western state from the Dakota-Texas stack onward. I was also arguably in every major CONUS region minus the mid-Atlantic and Appalachia. A large part of this was financed by work. Another large portion was made possibly by the widespread presence of friends and family throughout the US. Hopefully soon, I will embark on what I intend to be my last cross-country car voyage for a while in order to begin a full-time position in California.

My favorite states in which minimal time so far has been spent are Arizona, Oregon, and Maine. Utah would probably be up there as well, but I was only in Salt Lake City, so don't know what I'm missing in the southern portion of the state. Mississippi was probably the most unexpectedly interesting state.
