Often compared to Reagan and Thatcher, Brian Mulroney's government was quite unique from these, starting from the coalition that elected it.

In my book, Mulroney is a FF.

On foreign, defence, economic restructuring he gets full marks from me. His government's ethics and as it turned out, personal ethics were ridiculously loose, especially in the first term (by his own admission). Didn't go nearly far enough on debt/deficit, which Chretien/Martin successfully tackled. Needlessly reopened the Constitution with all the political consequences thereof.

As for the PC Party's fate... not foreordained but that coalition had imploded twice before with Borden and Diefenbaker. His hubris was believing he could ride that tiger where all post-Macdonald Tory leaders failed.

Overall, lean FF politically, neutral personally.

Lean FF. If he had focused on debt/deficit instead of repatriating the constitution, I owuld have a much higher opinion of him.

It happens quite a bit in the Canadian press when they list off leaders of the conservative movement in the 1980's/ Helmut Kohl is often thrown in as well.

Well he at least fits in with Reagan as another greedy whore for undeserved credit. Wink Though he too has very very little in common with Thatcher.

Smart guy. He left the office just in time to avoid being forever known as "Mr. 2 seats".

Mulroney was a much better campaigner than Campbell. I'm confident he could have salvaged a dozen or so.

Reagan, Thatcher and Mulroney make up the three-legged stool of Anglophone conservative leaders of the '80s.
