Whoa, I never knew Memphis was that low density. So maybe that's why it doesn't have many white liberals (there's only one noticeable Democratic white area in Memphis, which I'm guessing is downtown, it basically sits surrounded by black areas on three sides and a bunch of white Republicans to the east.)
Nope. You're looking at Midtown. Downtown is all the way at the Western edge of town, along the Mississippi River. And don't forget that municipal Memphis includes tons of areas that would be suburbs in most metros. We're constantly annexing new areas, against the will of the people who live there, which is why we haven't seen a population decline on the scale of St. Louis. We're about 70% of Shelby County's population and a clear majority of the metro, even though the Census includes some far flung counties. For more info:
