Greenwald's devolution into a crackpot conspiracy kook does a lot of damage to the anti-surveillance movement. For all this talk of Facebook being mean to Trump, the agencies tasked with maintaining national security are still working around the clock to ensure that every search, every web transaction, every email, and every date and time associated with it are logged in a giant database for them to use. Apparently we've forgotten about this, and one of the most vocal critics of the surveillance state acting like a clown doesn't help.

Trump's election was the biggest boon the establishment could possibly have asked for. He made them look good by being far worse. He discredited anti-establishment ideals by associating with them. (Not that he followed-through very much.) And some of the establishment's fiercest critics have discredited themselves by buying into his cult to greater or lesser degrees.

Sooo, anti-establishment radical Glenn Greenwald is claiming there's a whole host of establishment operatives (I won't say 'secret' because obviously we are all expected to easily know all about them) who spend all their time shutting down people like him from telling us anything about people like them. And he's telling us this... via his Twitter account. The same Twitter where he's hawking his book defending a billionare landlord, published via an indy publishing house, doubtless because evil Big Tech is making sure you can't get it by... letting you buy it from Amazon.

(I guess it's like one of those old Nigeran scam emails, where he wants to filter out anyone with enough critical thinking skills to question his contradictions.)

The Fox News personality ― who in the past has confessed to lying on his show ― admitted his commentary on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had been misguided.

But instead of taking full responsibility for his rhetoric parroting Kremlin talking points and defending Russian President Vladimir Putin, Carlson instead suggested Russia’s aggression had been a surprise (despite Western powers warning of it for months) and then snidely tried to pin the blame on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“We’ve been taken by surprise by the whole thing. We’re not the only ones who were, but we’re willing to admit it. The only thing more embarrassing than being wrong in your estimates is pretending that you weren’t,” blustered Carlson, who has taken a different tone since the invasion and has whined about being falsely accused of rooting for Russia.

UN says Ukraine's civilian deaths are being underestimated and the true number may never be known (April 02, 2022)

The United Nations warns that the civilian casualty statistics it publishes daily don't capture the full impact of the war in Ukraine — while military experts say the number of Ukrainian civilians killed by Russian forces likely won't be known until years after the conflict ends.

Experts say the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is providing the most accurate daily statistics on Ukraine's civilian casualties. But the OHCHR itself says it may be greatly underestimating the real casualty rate.

"OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration," it said.

Latest on Glenn's selective outrage from Marcy Wheeler.

Certainly, the fact that American citizens got charged in a Florida case for not disclosing that their political activism was funded, in part, by the FSB, seems to be of interest to Glenn Greenwald. The charges, along with a few overt acts, and the names of two FSB colleagues are what got added to an earlier indictment against the FSB handler, Aleksandr Ionov, filed last July.

Glenn won’t shut up about those charges, making appearances on Glenn Beck and Tucker Carlson’s show so all of them could lie about why members of the African People’s Socialist Party were charged.

They were charged because after one, Omali Yesh**teli, went on an all-expenses paid trip to Russia in 2015, the group started getting funding and completing requests for their FSB handler, Aleksandr Ionov, who ran a front called the Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia. For example, shortly after the trip, Ionov wrote the group and asked them to start a petition against the genocide of the African people in the US so that AGMR could start using it as propaganda. And when Russia needed someone to legitimize the “Donetsk People’s Republic,” in 2020, Ionov contacted the Floridians to publicly do so. And when Russia wanted to protest Twitter’s restrictions on Russian disinformation after the Ukraine invasion, Ionov flew one of the Americans to San Francisco to make it happen.

Russia wanted to be able to point to a certain kind of dissidence in the US, so they paid money to help sustain it. And the Americans didn’t disclose that they knew they were working with agents of Russia.
