Grinding poverty and early deaths for 90% of the population. Of course you want to return to that because you're a sociopath, but that's the answer to "how the United States existed".

That's a nice theory, anyway. Of course people want to return to times of economic growth and not the last 3.5 years of floundering, which of course has placed record amounts of people in poverty.
