Eventually, the political positions associated with religion conservatism that currently poll near 50-50 (such as abortion for example) will shift heavily against the religion conservatism position in a generation or 2 due to loss of membership in those conservative religious institutions from people leaving over disagreements with the religious conservatives opposition to same sex marriage who would otherwise be willing to stay and listen to the religious conservative arguments over other political issues, and set their own politics based on those issues.

The only way religious conservatives can prevent this is if they institutionally triage their discussion on the topic of same sex marriage.

In my opinion, this number completely fails to tell the whole situation in Israel. We basically never hear of people in Israel talking about the system failures that allow a party to win elections with that little. For example, the US Presidential Electoral College, the US Senate Apportionment, the US House Gerrymandering, all receive heavy amounts of criticism in the US regarding their systematic failures at ensuring a fair result in US Elections from both political analysts and from politicians themselves. Almost everyone in Israel seems to accept that their system works fine (when it in fact, is a systematic failure of a Democracy) without ever thinking to themselves about whether their government is legitimate.

Philippe Petain contributed far more to the Nazi war effort over the course of World War 2 than any other individual in the world, and its an absolute disgrace that his death sentence was not followed through upon during circumstances when other people whose crimes were far less significant and severe were being executed.

Not a single person who was tried over the course of the Nuremberg trials following World War 2 was even nearly as morally depraved as Philippe Petain was.

The only personality in the entirety of World War 2 who could give him a contest on the topic of the most morally depraved person throughout the conflict was Adolf Hitler himself.

It does not matter one bit what the composition of the Supreme Court is at any moment for this to be true. It would be true if the Court was 9-0 left wing. It would be true if the Court was 5-4 left wing. It is true with the Court being 5-4 right wing. It would be true if the Court was 9-0 right wing.

If you think that court packing is an inherently problematic practice and/or that court packing should be banned through an amendment to the constitution, or anything similar,
Then that indicates that you have absolutely no respect for constitutional separation of powers, nor any respect for the preservation of democracy itself.

Trump's obvious atheism is what gives me the most pause about my likely vote for him in 2020. A person with as much power as the US President needs to feel accountability to something greater than themselves.

Oh yeah, I agree on this. Trump pursues Christian policies, I think he genuinely does admire people of faith and views it as an admirable “trait”, but I’m 100% convinced he’s a nonbeliever himself. Much like Obama, who drew inspiration from the teachings of Christ while (most likely) holding skeptical views on the existence of God.

I honestly think even religious bigot leaders of the medieval era had a conscience awareness that God was not real. I cannot think of any other possible explanation as to why none of them ended up using a system where they decided all criminal cases by praying to God to "rig" a coin flip to an "accurate result" and then flipping a coin to decide innocence or guilt than that these leaders all knew deep down that God was not real.

On a tangent from that religion debate, here's a hot take: If you only believe in the physical world that can be observed scientifically, then you believe that humans are only nature+nurture, meaning that we're all just chemical reactions responding to stimulus. This in turn means that if you knew the position and velocity of all atoms in the universe, you'd be able to predict the entire future of existence. In other words, you logically have to embrace determinism and accept that humans don't have free will.

This literally describes my own beliefs.

Its completely impossible for an incumbent president to improve their performance from their initial election to their run for re-election regardless of the circumstances due to how high political polarization is, and it will remain as such for some decades into the future.

I support compulsory voting but only for people at least 16 years old and less than 48 years old. Higher turnout for younger people provides a clear benefit to democracy, but higher turnout for older people provides a more mixed cost and benefit result for democracy.
