How about Wyoming and Montana? Idaho and Wyoming would look terribly awkward.  Wyoming + Montana would have a population similar to Idaho anyway.

Combine Kansas, Nebraska, South and North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming and you'll have a state with about the same population as Washington.
