Ah. Good that he lost then. Who won, and what can we expect from the winner?

EDIT: Wait, Hynes was on the Republican AND the Democratic ballots? How is that legal?

Fusion.  Cross-endorsements are allowed in New York.  The minor parties usually back the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Where there are no viable Republicans, it's not unknown for Republicans to cross-endorse the Democrat, especially in judicial-type races.

So.... Thompson is going to have to beat Hynes again now?  With Republican voters added into the mix (which, in Brooklyn, are disproportionately Orthodox and Hasidim)?

Bollocks.  Well, good to know I'll have a reason to make damn sure I don't miss that vote.

de Blasio hitting all the right notes in this speech- at least for me. Lhota is going to get massacred.

Any link to his speech?

Also let me just say that dammit, NYTimes, why don't you have a precinct map for Public Advocate?  (And, heck, the Kings DA race would be nice too, though I can imagine what it looks like pretty easily.)

The mayoral map is great, but this just leaves me wanting more.

I was watching it on local TV, so sorry. Speech is over now. Basically, taking tale of two cities approach. Often a strained metaphor but it is really becoming more fitting here in NYC, imho. Closing community hospitals vs. Luxury condos. Lack of affordable housing, continued to say that stop and frisk is unequal etc.

Looks like Thompson won the hipster vote. Williamsburg was by far his best area.

South Williamsburg.  Satmar Hasidim don't count as hipsters.

They were Hasidim before it was cool.

And maybe their hatred of the state of Israel could be considered ironic.

Board of Elections announces a recount. We won't know if de Blasio cleared 40% until Monday.

Oh I get it now. de Blasio's wife is Black (and is apparently a Lesbian? help me out here...). That explains so much as to why he is winning Black areas while the Black guy is winning the Italian areas. Actually, only begins to explain...

Per NYTimes:  NYC Board of Elections sent out 47K absentees, most of them to Democratic voters.  25K were received back so far; 19K were valid.  Absentee counting begins Monday.

Racial vote is broken, I think.

Haha, deBlasio's kids out there.  That 'fro is fantastic.

I assume someone has done a photoshop of Bloomberg stopping and frisking that 'fro, but I haven't seen one yet.

Good to see De Blasio above 40%.

Stringer seems to be winning too, which is good news for Quinnipiac and not so good news for PPP.

He won by four points and has been declared the winner.

There is a tiny ray of hope for Lhota.  If the first polls has him within 10-15 points of de Blasio and not like 70-30, then various anti-de Balsio power brokers like Bloomberg might throw their resources behind Lhota making it a close race.  And this depiste Lhota calling Bloomberg an idiot earlier this year.  There are some worried business-friendly Democrats that might also come over to Lhota.  If not it will be a coronation of de Blasio.

I'm scrolling over the precinct map on the NY Times and notice a precinct on the edge of Chinatown that only had one vote recorded. It was for Liu.

Hynes may have the Republican line, but he won't be using it:

Thank goodness.  This was the race with the highest chance of a disastrous outcome, and the voters did the right thing.

If de Blasio does win and governs like he campaigned (I suspect he will be much more moderate and really would be that "progressive"), I think the high end home prices for NYC suburbs will surge as the high income residents in NYC might just move to these high end suburbs.

Looks like it. Although Staten Island is very close. Italians liked Thompson.

What's with DeBlasio apparently winning Borough Park? I was also going to ask about all the Thompson strength in Staten Island. Interestingly DeBlasio won the North Shore, though doesn't that also have lots of Park Slope/Greenwich Village style liberals?
