Here's an alternate 2020 scenario where both Ohio and Florida vote for the losing Democratic candidate:

It was hard to come up with a map like this.

Alternate 2012 election where Obama's approvals going into election day were 10 points lower than they actually were:

Pennsylvania, Iowa and Virginia were the deciding states of the election and all three go very narrowly for Romney, allowing him to win 292-246. It would've been 285-253 for Obama without these three states.

Every election since 2000 now follows the 306-232 rule. I will post maps that show the other party winning with the previous elections electoral vote count.

2000 if the Lewinsky scandal grew more serious:

2004 if Bush took a more controversial immigration stance:

2008 if the housing crisis wasn't as severe:

2012 if the economy never recovered:

2016 if Kasich ran and every state shifted exactly 9% toward the GOP from 2012:

Jimmy Carter (1976) vs. George H.W Bush (1988) by state.

Wisconsin is the closest state, with Bush edging it out by 7,267 votes. Pennsylvania is the closest state on the Carter side, with him netting 28,610 more votes than Bush.

2016 - Election deadlocks after Trump wins 270-268 and House chooses McMullin over numerous candidates in the contingent election. Tim Kaine becomes VP with the Senate 50-50 and casts a vote for himself.

Here's an even more wild scenario. Election night mostly plays out the same as our timeline but by midnight it's clear even stranger things set in motion. Clinton is called the winner in PA as news networks determine there aren't enough remaining rural ballots for Trump to win but even as he leads by under 15,000 votes in WI, under 5,000 in MI and Clinton leads by under 3,000 in AZ, It's clear that this is a realigning election. By far the biggest story of the night is McMullin pulling it out in UT by around 1,000 votes over Trump. Ultimately, Trump leads with 269 electoral votes, one electoral vote away from 270, Clinton trails Trump with 263 and McMullin has his six Utah electoral votes. In this timeline, I'd imagine Trump would try to work out a deal with McMullin that he'd give up his electors and have them vote for Trump in exchange for Trump offering him a Secretary of State position. In this timeline though, McMullin turns down the offer. When it comes to vote, faithless electors change the totals to make it Trump 267 and Clinton 258. McMullin still has the third highest amount of electoral votes so the House vote to break the tie is between Trump, McMullin and Clinton. In a remarkable turnaround, the GOP state delegations decide to vote McMullin into office, feeling Trump in office could have negative repercussions for the party in the future.

"Repeat after me"
"I David Evan McMullin do solemnly swear" I David Evan McMullin do solemnly swear
"That I will faithfully execute" That I will faithfully execute
"The Office of President of the United States" The Office of President of the United States
"And will to the best of my ability" And will to the best of my ability
"Preserve, protect and defend" Preserve, protect and defend
"The Constitution of the United States" The Constitution of the United States
"So help me God!" So help me God!

Congratulations Mr. President!
