Despite all the signals, I don't think he'll run.

If he does, though, yeah, Tmac will be governor again.  Kenny Alexander gets bumped down to Lt. Governor in that case.

it's not just signals, he's literally filed the paper work

It's not uncommon to file the paper work and then back out.  I'll wait for an official announcement.

I kind of hope he does run, though.  He was a good governor the first time around.

maybe he doesn't, I certainly hope he doesn't

There's a chance he finds himself in the cabinet in say commerce

Wait does Jones actually have a shot???

Finally, a chance to talk about this race!

Back when Herring was still running for Governor, Jones racked up some major endorsements, including half of the Dem caucus in both houses of the VA legislature, as well as Cory Booker (whose campaign he had worked for in 2020).

In comparison, Herring has only a handful of backers.

Herring rejoined the AG race in December, after Jones had become the de-facto AG nominee. Herring seems to think he’ll be able to walk to a third term. But between Jones’ major support (I never expected Northam to break for him in the primary), and Herring’s scandal, I’d say it’s definitely competitive.

I just think that the biggest hurdle will be the name ID for Jones

Virginia GOP agrees on how to select their nominees. There will be a 'remote convention' where voters cast RCV ballots at 37 spots across the state.

why go through all this work not to have a pimary

The fact that it's under 10 is amazing for Jones. He really has a great future

Not going to lie. I did not have this race on my list of "winnable races the GOP will totally blow in 2021/2022", that is after Youngkin was nominated. At first, I thought the VA GOP was going to put up any number of crazies for this race, but they actually went with the seemingly sane one of the bunch. But, his literally praise of his opponent, history of offshoring, and seemingly staunch pro life stance has totally upended this race. This is what happens when you dont have a bench in a state, you blow winnable races down the line.

A bit off topic, but the statue of former Governor (and Senator) Harry F. Byrd, Sr. of 'Massive Resistance' infamy, and who helped build up the much vaunted 'Byrd Machine' that dominated Virginia politics for the better part of the 20th century (and defined the Jim Crow era in the state) has been removed from Richmond's Capitol Square:

How is this impressive. Interesting attack a Republican to try to paint your Democratic opponent as a Trump supporter??

Bottom line: Maybe the Afghanistan issue will switch...10,000 or something to Youngkin maybe? If the race is close enough to where those 10,000 voters made a difference, McAuliffe has clearly had other issues.

can't tell you how often FP decides governor races in Virginia

If McAuliffe wins it will be a result of having a proven track record as governor already and the state's further increasing liberal bent.

If Youngkin wins it will be a result of a depressed Democratic turnout in DC area and a very strong Republican turnout in places like Chesterfield and Virginia Beach. Also, it will have also been a result of Youngkin doing better than expected in the debates and being able to tie McAuliffe to Biden somehow.
Attacking a president who's not underwater isn't going to help very much. Also, GE debates change nobody's mind.

Military issues would definitely be more effective as a national issue than a state one, even in vet-heavy Virginia.
Biden's approvals are already in the toilet.

it's 50% higher than Trump after his first month in office
