The online proctoring programs universities/professors are making students use for exams are creepy as hell.   AI analysis on you through the camera & recording your screen, requiring ID and a room scan, etc.   Seems like students of an earlier generation would have made a much bigger fuss about it.

I didn't know about this but that is creepy. I haven't gotten to try online college yet but that makes me question what level of privacy I'd be giving over to them.

Dang, that’s intrusive.

I’ve sat exams at two separate universities since the pandemic began, and both took the better option of retooling the exams to test your ability to understand and explain the course material, rather than just recite the syllabus. As a result, they could just leave us to our own devices during the exam hours, secure that if we hadn’t bothered to learn the material, our essays would be crap, and they could just mark us down (pass rates remained fairly stable, so something must have worked).

Seems a lot easier, and safer, than forcing students to download spyware.

Unfortunately, in the US education system, keeping costs down is generally more important than actual learning, at least at the undergraduate level. So having exams where students have to actually think and generate original thought would take too much time and money to administer compared to a formulaic online test where security is outsourced to an external provider.

I gave in and did what all the hipster kids are doing and booked the new JetBlue Mint service to London instead of flying United or BA like usual. Can't wait to try it out!

It's official - Thanksgiving escape booked and time off secured. Meeting in DC on Wednesday, lunch with a friend and art exhibition in Brussels, then hang out in Milan. When COVID first hit Europe, I committed to visiting Milan ASAP to show solidarity with Northern Italy, and while I didn't expect it to take so long, the day is finally coming. Smiley

Milan and 3x London in the next 2 months. Smiley Just like old times.

Congratulations! What's it about?

I wrote one the last two years currently under review by family and friends. I'll definitely try the find a publisher or, if not successful, do it myself online. I already started another one.

It's a Gaimanesque urban fantasy involving a werewolf working as a civil servant caught up in a mystery. It's quite fluid, and just came to me as I wrote it.

I once had a spur of the moment story idea centered on a Communist Party official in, say, Cold War-era Hungary who becomes a vampire. A stoic, apolitical police investigator, tasked with looking into a recent string of murders involving mysterious bite marks on the victims' necks, is forced to team up with an underground Catholic priest. It has yet to see itself past the phase of me, unasked for, telling others about it.

I would 100% buy and read that.

"So, why did you move to Hungary?"
"Uh.... book research."

...huh, I actually did start a novel [which was a screenplay first]. I was forced to appropriate the notes for a Grad School class and the prof never returned 'em

Pulling an all-nighter to view the lunar eclipse tonight through my telescope. Hopefully the damn clouds go away.

Was it worth sitting in the cold and staring at the untainted nighttime sky for a once in a half a millennium lunar eclipse? Hell f*****g yeah it was!
