This will run for one week, as it is only designed to measure opinions in the immediate aftermath of the Boston marathon murder case verdict.

Option 5 for me.

When you are not able to imprison someone who's a peril to society and exile is not a hard enough punishment.

In a capitalist society: never.

In a socialist society: against all who attempt to destroy the socialist state by force of arms or by funding such activities; capitalists, administrators, or managers who don't comply with dictates of workers' councils; violent criminals

In a communist society: never.

Never, in America at least, because here it's essentially a roll of the dice every time to see if the person dies a clean, neat or horribly agonizing death.

For any 1st degree murder which has solid DNA proof, Confession, Fingertips, or Video Tape, and  for terrorists

I'm not against it for extremely heinous murder cases and for high levels of treason.  I care more that they/we get the right people and then keep them away from the rest of us.  I don't really care how they do it.  I don't really have a strong opinion about this anymore, there are good, logical reasons to be on either side.

This, although I'd also throw in especially heinous 2nd degree murders too (e.g. rape & murder of a child).

Only in the most heinous cases, where the defendant is utterly unrepentant (i.e., proud) and we are absolutely certain we have the correct killer. As Warren Farrell points out in The Myth of Male Power, 23 US execution victims were later found to be innocent. (And, as Farrell helpfully points out, all 23 were male).

unsurprising, considering men commit literally over 90% of murders

In extraordinary Hannibal Lecter-type cases only where someone has been imprisoned for murder, escapes, and then murders again.

Pretty much this, although I can't say I'm going to shed a tear if scum like the Boston Marathon Bomber happens to be executed by a capitalist government.
