So Helms is to be considered a racist if others within earshot interpret racial malice in words that are not themselves racist? That seems to open a slippery slope into the nonsense of microaggression.

Nice job omitting the accused's explanation of the event. But, it is perfect acceptable to assume the perpetrator of character assassination is 100% truthful in a he-said-she-said situation, so long as we find the accused's political views distasteful, n'est pas? After all, it is not like Helms's accuser in this case has a history of making allegations of racism against political opponents.
