The mollify Russia to encircle China idea is a tempting one but I think has a couple of big problems:

1) There's very little evidence that the Russian leadership is interested in allying with the West against China. Their ideal situation would be to have their own sphere of influence encompassing the former USSR that allows them to remain an independent great power actor and play China and the US off against each other. Actually committing to an alliance against China would expose Russia to military conflict with its largest and most powerful neighbour for what benefit?

There was some Chinese strategic thought in say the first half of Trump's presidency that they thought this was his goal. Become friends with Russia to use them to counter Chinese power. Regardless of if you think that was Trump's plan or not or whether he even had a plan, our foreign policy establishment ("the Blob" as Ben Rhodes calls them) was never going to accept that, fought him tooth and nail on it his whole presidency, and it didn't last past him leaving office. His "China are not a friend" stance did.

Quote
If the US was happy enough sacrificing independent democratic allies and free speech for geopolitical benefit, then it could just as easily surrender Taiwan to China, shut up about Xinjiang and Tibet and negotiate an evolution of the international order to accommodate a grand bargain with China. In fact, given China's greater power that would probably make more sense than sacrificing it for the sake of Russian neutrality.

In 2022, China is way more an existential threat to the future and livelihood of the people of the United States than Russia is, it's not close. I'm not talking in military terms either. Russia even when it was Soviet never had as a goal manipulate all our multinational corporations to not offend Chinese political sensibilities and a policy to put mass numbers of people in this country out of work. That does not excuse Russia invading Ukraine, but our first geopolitical priority should be China, not Russia.

As big of a threat China is today, they still arent as big as the USSR were during the Cold War(and neither is Russia).

And if Putin wants to go back to the Soviet Union days so badly, let's remind him what happened when they invaded Afghanistan in 1979. We shouldn't be putting boots on the ground, but do everything we can to make his life and the lives of his cronies as hard as possible.

And keep in mind it was the Russians who destroyed Afghanistan and they did far more evil things in Afghanistan than even the tailban did .

Russia should be kicked out of all international organizations. A complete and total boycott and quarantine. His regime needs to be bankrupted, even at the cost of some economic pain for the West.

Sadly this seems to be why the west can’t respond properly to either Russia or China . We are so addicted with low prices that it hampers our ability to respond.

Would also help if we'd spent the past year expanding production instead of constricting it. Biden's foreign policy has been good but his domestic policy is a disaster across the board and this is an example.

This is a huge example :

This is a huge example :

Keystone XL wasn't even going to be operational for another decade and was not going to import additional oil.  It was just a shorter and more efficient route for Phase I which already exists, importing that same oil over a longer route.  Furthermore, even if you+Crenshaw weren't lying, that oil did not disappear.  It just remains in Canada, which is on our side in this conflict.  A pipeline just moves oil from place to place, it does not *produce* oil.  If we had 830,000 extra barrels of oil coming in from Canada every day, then that would be 830,000 barrels fewer that Canada has, and maybe they'd be the ones importing from Russia instead of us.

It's very tiresome that Republicans have seized on this as their way to undercut Biden in a moment when we should be having national unity, but also very frustrating because it's based on misinforming people.  And you ought to be better than getting behind these lazy Fox News cheap shots at a time like this.

Then impose tough  sanctions on Russian oil .

Good, if Ukraine can't win with official military forces, they should drag Putin into costly asymmetric warfare. Sooner or later this would hurt his standing on Russia.

Yup and in urban asymmetric warfare , tanks and air advantages no longer help you anywhere as much either .

Kick Russia off the U.N. Security Council

I realize it's practically unlikely, but god dammit, we need to hit Russia on every single front absent direct confrontation.

Quote
There was never a formal process to admit Russia into the U.N. after the USSR's demise, and the Security Council seat was granted via a decision from the UN's legal counsel with no action requested from the General Assembly. That edict could be revoked, and the U.S. could demand a vote in the General Assembly on Russia's Security Council membership. Would such a maneuver save Kyiv? No, but Moscow must be besieged on all fronts if there is any hope of rescuing Ukrainians from a Russian occupation. The worst crisis in post-war Europe demands nothing less than concerted, dramatic action aimed at Moscow's total isolation, and the time to start is now.

The UN is useless

Most Indian media are for a neutral or pro-Russia position.  Many seem to be disturbed by Russia's action but there is even greater concern about backing what they consider double standards of the West.  There are many comments about how Canada dealt with the recent protests and Canada lecturing India how India dealt with farm protests of 2020-2021 as part of the hypocrisy of the collective West.

Looks like I probably am gonna have to get ready to debate family members of mine on this issue this weekend
