4 days, 3 choices.

Iowa Congressman James Weaver is back again, this time with the Populist party, which in the same vein as Greenback and Union Labor, is calling for the free coinage of silver, a graduated income tax, inflationary monetary policy and general anti-monopoly policies, including the nationalization of telegraph, telephone and railroad lines. Other policy planks include ending "corporate welfare", support for union rights, reduced working hours, higher wages etc. and some restrictions on immigration. They also favor 1 term for Presidents.

Weaver's running mate is former Confederate officer James Field, who has also served as the attorney general of Virginia. On a similar note, it is worth noting that the Weaver campaign is rather progressive on civil rights for the era, and has worked on building coalitions with blacks in the south, to the chagrin of some nativist white supporters of the Populist party.

The Prohibition party, which tried and failed to merge with the Populists this election, nominated John Bidwell, a veteran of the Mexican-American war, a former Republican congressman from California and a general trailblazer from that state. Bidwell also has personal populist tendencies, along with strong support for prohibition and temperance.

Reverend James Cranfill of Texas is Bidwell's running mate.

A new party, the Socialist Labor Party, has nominated camera maker Simon Wing and activist Charles Matchett for President and Vice President, they both hail from the Northeast.

The Socialist Labor Party carries the new idea of socialism across from Europe, backing trade unions, marxist economic theory, higher taxes on the rich and anti capitalism. Many of their supporters and organizers are immigrants from Europe, especially Germany, and they also have a sizable anarchist faction.

Populist for me

Although I'd not be unfavourable to a Populist win.

In a tightly contested 3 way election, almost every state is competitive and here is the map

The Socialists win out 208 to 143 over the Populists, with Prohibition finishing with 93 electoral votes though they finish 2nd in the almost 3 way split popular vote.

The Socialists were buoyed by strong German American and European immigrant support from the Northeast to the Midwest and they took home big states like NY, NJ, OH, PA and IL, even if their backing is mostly regional.

They also scored an upset victory in TX and a win out west in MT.

As for the populists, they get strong support in the midwest and far west, while eking out narrow wins in much of the south, it isn't enough though.

Prohibition does well in the northeast along with CA and a handful of southern states, and runs a competitive 2nd in most places.
