Have some of you not paid attention to 2022 redistricting? Every state where democrats had full control went for strong gerrymanders with the exception of MD(and that was struck down by the courts so it's understandable why they only gave Andy Harris Biden +0). The idea that they are going to surrender to the GOP is just laughable

Disgusting map. Classic NY Dems protecting incumbents over creating a maps that are good fair maps or an effective gerrymander.

It's this sort of stuff that makes me really frustrated with NY Dems - politicians serving themselves takes front seat to actually serving constituents and doing things good for the people of the state

They are going to ignore the comission and pass an actual gerrymander. The court is clearly partisan enough now to allow it, there was no legal basis in overturning the original decision.

Democrats need to pass that bill to limit redistricting lawsuits to Albany County before making a new map!
Republicans will Judge shopp again if they won't

Given the reactions, I think the exact point was to have a map very close to the 2022 lines. And then justify their disapproval by noting how similar it is to the map just rejected and doesn't solve any "issues."

There's also a few changes to 6, 14, and 7 I believe.

Anyway,  the chambers aren't in session until the end of February right now on their calendars, so plenty of time for maneuvers.

Passed the commision 9-1. I know a lot of you don't want to believe it but the deal has been made and their is a 99% chance this is close to the final map (maybe minor changes within 2%).

No it is not. The legislature will reject it.

Not sure what the commission has to do with the legislature rejecting/accepting it. Seems clear the legislature will likely reject this. Two completely different entities

Any map that has anything less than a completely safe Dem seat combining Staten Island and the white liberal areas of lower Manhattan should be summarily rejected for that reason alone. At least in other parts of the state like upstate and Long Island there are generally some sorts of tradeoffs (e.g. making 1 seat more Dem puts another seat out of reach whereas it might otherwise be competitive in a good year). But in NYC, there is no tradeoff whatsoever with making sure that the Staten Island district ends up safely Democratic.

New York’s congressional and state legislative lines are drawn primarily by a 10-person independent commission, at least in the first instance.  Each of the four legislative leaders (majority and minority leader in each legislative chamber) chooses 2 commissioners; those 8 commissioners choose 2 others who have not been registered Democrats or Republicans for the last 5 years.

These are not random people off the street, they are party functionaries picked by legislative leadership. To think the legislature had no imput in these maps is naive.

Note the leaders right now are tight lipped.  There isn't a session calendered in until the end of the month so they have time to judge the caucuses, executive,  and national party.

Notably not the statements of those who could have been hypothetically super supportive of a plan they hypothetically support and guided. Just "thank you for doing your work and following the guidelines."

Not to mention giving Staten Island to Dan Goldman allows for an Asian plurality Brooklyn district.
