In reality,  believing that "oh white people are so racist they would FREAK OUT if a black guy was leader" would be proof the Democrats have learnt the wrong lesson from 2016.

Irt the 'whitelash' theory: I think it would be the wrong decision for the democrats to conclude from 2016 that "omg white blue collar voters are all racist thugs who will never vote for a party with a black Muslim leader!!!".
