Yeah, it's been alluded to but (I don't think) posted directly here, but he was a regular poster on various racist and neo-nazi sites. As well as a former member of the Progress Party.

He was on a small island and the only one who was armed. What was to stop him?

50 people rushing him.  Seriously.

I was talking about something like that.

What kind of gun/s the killer used?

I'm wondering that as well.  Even with military weapons, except a heavy machine gun which isn't carried, it would exceptionally difficult to kill 80 people.  I'm wondering about either a second gunman (or third gunman) or panic and drowning.  It's tragic either way.

Reports suggest pistol and automatic weapon.

It sounds to me like the people were basically trapped on the island with him for a while until authorities showed up and arrested him. He had plenty of time to walk around and indiscriminately kill people.

Do we know how soon after he first started killing people on the island that the first real police came onto the island?

Even reloading, it is almost impossible for one person to do that.

The possibility of a second gunman has been raised by the police because of some witness statements.

Around four or five people still missing on Utøya; which is less than what was thought a few hours ago.

Unless there were a lot of drownings, there probably was a second gunman.

I promise not to open a debate about gun laws, but just out of personal curiosity, does anyone know what the gun laws are like in Norway? I imagine they are pretty strict.

My thoughts are with the Norwegian people today.  I hope for justice and I mourn the dead.

It's hard to say something that isn't trite and inane, but I do feel for the people of Norway.  I just wish there was a way to do so that wasn't cliched and trite.

Yeah, Scandinavian society is probably the closest human beings have come to creating a utopia. It's shocking that something of this magnitude could happen there.

Damaged in connection with the bombing yesterday, but it wasn't destroyed (as some media apparently have said)

Beat the Swede ;-)
On another note - I was quite impressed with SVT1 that led its transmission to NRK1 both yesterday and today. DR chose to show Disney cartoons instead yesterday while the events at Oslo and Utyøa happened!

What happened in Norway is so tragic that I can't find any words to express how shocked I was when I heard about it, but what you wrote pretty much summarises a part of my sentiments. Apart from being appalled that so many people were killed brutally, I was also shocked that such a monstrous attack happened in Norway, a peaceful small nation which was not affected by terrorism before and is very similar to so many other countries in Europe.

How can you claim to know what was possible? You weren't there and don't have anything close to all the information available.

From what I heard, some of them took the approach of "I'll fall down and let the killer think he already got me rather than risk him getting me while I run."  Problem was, he made sure of his kills with head shots before moving on.

I used to shoot.  It's not impossible, but it is hugely likely.  From the photos, there was a lot of ground cover.

According to Wikipedia he had a rifle, a Glock, and shotgun.  The last two a short range weapons.

That was my thought as well. The more I learn about this story, the more it shocks me and I find it uncomprehensible.

"Anomie", as Durkheim said.

Don't forget that the rate of suicide is quite high in Scandinavian "paradises".
Many people are in fact psychologically lost and isolated.
And the rest of the society is without much individual protection against mad and stubborn individuals.
