I didn’t see a mega thread for Ohio Senate. Please feel free to merge if I missed it.

Surprising, since he's for sure safe in the GE. Possible this increases the chance for him to vote for Trump conviction.

Let's just hope Jim Jordan won't replace him.

Calling this race "titanium R" is a complete misuse of the term. It's likely R.

Didn't see this coming at all. Hoping this doesn't embolden Dem donors to burn piles of money Joker-style on what is still most likely an unwinnable race, but they probably will anyway if only because people probably still see Ohio as The Swing State™. Maybe if Jim Jordan gets the nomination it could be a fair bit tighter than Portman's blowouts, but it still won't amount to anything.

Safe R to Safe R, but the margin could be a bit smaller for Republicans now.

My first reaction was delight. Even if this seat seems out of our hands, we could make a play and try to at least make a dent in the margin.

Then I realized that this means Jim Jordan is probably going to run. I want to die.

Not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, this seat moves from unwinnable to winnable in a perfect storm, but on the other hand, most Republicans are a downgrade from Portman.

Even if 2022 is a decent midterm for Democrats, I'd still expect Democrats to lose *some* ground in the Midwest. Even if it's not "Titanium R", it's Safe R.

This news probably helps Mike DeWine. Some of the folks considering a run against DeWine in the primary (Jim Jordan, Jim Renacci etc.) may jump into an open senate race rather than running against an incumbent in the gubernatorial primary.

imo GA will be a GA-SEN 2008 runoff redux and OH will be an OH-SEN 2006 redux

In my opinion, this is a signal that he will vote for the conviction  of Trump. For Democrats, that doesn't change anything unless Jim Jordan becomes a Republican nominee

Early rating
With Portman: Safe R
Without Portman: Likely R
Without Portman, Jordan is R nominee: Tilt / Lean R

Wonder if the seat being open gets Tim Ryan to finally pull the trigger on a statewide run.

When has Portman ever voted with Dems on anything of significance?

Even Grassley wouldn’t be able to hold that seat against Senator-elect Abby Purple heart, though.

Also, I wonder what Jon Husted will do? I think he’d have a tough time in the primary running for senate next year. My guess is that he runs for re-election on a ticket with DeWine, and will try to run for Governor in 2026.

How much money will McConnell dump into this primary to stop Jim Jordan?

Cook already downgrading the race all the way to Lean R:

A bit questionable, but maybe they think if, say, a candidate like Jim Jordan wins the primary it could be more competitive than it should.

I'd pay to see those messages.
