Quote
On Thursday, Venice, Italy became the first city in the world to charge day tourists a fee just to visit its historic canals and other attractions on peak days.

The measure is designed to counter over-tourism and mitigate the deleterious impact large crowds can have on some of the city's fragile sites, while also persuading some tourists to visit during less busy times of the year.

The roughly $5.37 fee only applies on 29 days that are deemed to be the busiest between April 25, a holiday in Italy, and July 14, in a trial phase of the reservation-and-fee system.

I can see both sides of the argument, but to tend to approve.

I think it makes sense for a city like venice, which is in consistent high demand and does not necessarily need tourists crammed in en masse. I'm not sure how many other cities it would work for.

If it's just 5 Euros than I can't see it as a big deal.

Freedom Fee. It's pretty nominal and serves a good purpose.

Fine, all things considered. Now, I think this should be only for foreing tourists.

I could see it being a little nuisance since everyone will need the QR code, including those who are staying in local hotels (and exempt from a special day-trip fee due to hotel tax).  But, it's not the end of the world, either.

Strangely, the weekend I'm going to be in Venice (first weekend in June) is the only weekend between now and early July where the tax is not in effect.  I'm honestly not sure why.

I'm going to reserve judgment, but I suspect that the only tourists it will actually deter are broke Italian students and that sucks (personally I try to keep Venice out of my bucket list either way for the same reasons we are discussing this in the first place, although I went last October somewhat fortuitously).
