THE GREAT BATTLE: THE 1852 ELECTION

The election turned out to be one of the most contested in US History. With a popular incumbent not running for another term, the Democrats lost a lot of support, which the Whigs capitalized on. Despite being President Dallas’s handpicked successor, Lewis Cass was viewed a bad choice for the nomination, especially for his VP choice.

The Whigs were attacked by the Democrats for Taylor’s lack of charisma, and his non experience. But the Whigs shot back that Taylor knew about his inexperience, that’s why he choose Governor Lincoln.

The real trouble started when the two parties began talking about ethics and slavery. While Taylor owned slaves, he believes that slavery should be kept where it is currently located at, but Cass believed in expansion of slavery.

The disagreements hit a high point when the Whigs exposed the fact that Pierce was an alcoholic. The Whigs attacked the issue greatly, which put the democrats at a disadvantage, because the democratic candidates did not know what stance to take on the issue. Eventually, Pierce admitted to the accusations, but the damage was already done.

ELECTION NIGHT: 1852

On election night, it turned out to be a decisive victory for the Whigs, their first winning candidate since William Henry Harrison in 1840.

Coming up: The first term of Zachary Taylor.

Don't you think we're a bit early for Lincoln??? He hadn't really done much up to the election.
