I view him as a discoverer in the sense he helped piece together the world map and extend Western Civilization. That doesn't take away from his obvious crimes which have already been discussed, but yes, I see him as the "discoverer" of the Western half of the globe, even if he still thought it was the East Indies the day he died.

Why was the extension of Western Civilization inherently good?
