I'm a "high school" maths teacher in the UK, with a degree in Mathematics. I have to agree with 0.999999999999999... = 1 being true.

Another argument I am yet to see in this thread is the following:

Let us say that:

x = 0. 999...
then
10x = 9.999... since the decimal is recurring.

Finding the difference between these:
10x-x = 9.999... - 0.999...
so
9x = 9
so
x = 1
QED.
