I think long-term committed relationships are very necessary for society. But I don't care if you call it "marriage" or "partnership" or "civil union" or just "long-term relationship" (I kinda like the French term, "civil solidarity pact", myself), or if it's between a man and a woman or a woman and a woman or two men and one woman or four women or whatever, or if the people involved sleep only with each other or with other people too or are asexual and don't have sex as a part of their relationship.

Though my polyamorous friends say it gets extremely complicated to maintain anything long-term with more than three people.

I don't really like any of the options, but the last two are certainly not correct, so I went with the first one.

An institution worth preserving, and worth expanding the benefits of to gay and lesbian Americans.

It's hard to say it isn't outdated when the majority fail.

Option 1, I believe it gives a solid base (it's not indispensable, but it helps) to form a family and I see no reasons to deny marriage to people of the same sex.

1 in 3 end in divorce and the average one lasts seven years before ending. As contracts go, it's one of the least stable. People get to marry and divorce two, three, four times over. People marry for money, or for a passport, or get married because they get drunk the night before or because it's the only relationship in which they think they can have sex. Some people have their spouse picked for them, some pick them off the internet and ship them home for a fee and some are forced to marry someone they don't want to. Some people marry so they can advance their career or get married for the nth time so they can get their wedding pictures in a magazine yet again. Straights have basically treated marriage like sh-t. Yet individual marriages on the whole can work and it's a wonderful thing. That's why it should be open to gays; to recognise that our relationships can work too, but if we piss it all away, then at the end of the day we're just the same as you. Smiley

Yeah, pretty much this. It's great for those who wanted, so it's not outdated, but it's nothing so lofty as a "pillar of a well-functioning society."

Option 2, although I do support civil unions.  Is this poll supposed to weed out the "homophobes" on here (whether they really are or not?)

This is what happens when you liberalize divorce laws. Let's go back to the proper traditional marriage, not the half assed one that many Americans talk about.

Because people should be forced to stay in marriages against their will.

Marriage is a contract. I merely want to change the standard terms and conditions. It's no different than signing a 50 year lease.

Good to see our good old "moral" conservative treat sentimental feelings in purely commercial and material terms.
