Republican victories in North Dakota and Massachusetts in 2012 kept the Senate 53-47. In the 2013 Special election, which took place later in the year in the timeline, Gomez won bringing it to 52-48.

Oh, right, I remember that part with Gomez. Looks like they DID need Ed Markey...
