A judge has released a rioter into house arrest, finding him too stupid to pose any major threat to society.

Doug Jensen, a QAnon conspiracy theorist who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 in support of former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, was ordered released on home incarceration by a federal judge on Tuesday. Jensen, who was among the first rioters to enter the seat of the legislative branch of the federal government and chased U.S. Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman up the stairs leading to the Senate, believed that he was at the White House, which is the center of the executive branch.

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly said that Jensen’s conduct was serious, but that the threat Jensen posed to the community could be mitigated through strict conditions of release. Under federal law, pretrial detention is supposed to be a last resort and implemented only when there are no other conditions that would ensure public safety.

Judge Kelly cited Jensen’s lack of a grade-school level understanding of the U.S. government in his decision to release Jensen. Jensen, in Jan. 6 videos that were released to the media on Monday night, repeatedly stated that he believed he was at the White House.

“This is me, touching the f--king White House,” Jensen said, with his hand on an exterior wall of the U.S. Capitol.

“Storm the White House!” Jensen screamed in another video as he panned up to the Capitol dome. “That’s what we do!”

Judge Kelly said that Jensen couldn’t have preplanned or coordinated his actions on Jan. 6 because Jensen “had no basic understanding of where he even was.”

I can see how only house arrest would be warranted here, but I'm not sure I agree that being ignorant of a situation or surroundings means that someone is less dangerous. With that said this guy is probably the type who won't do anything without a crowd around.

Pelosi's select committee will be a giant waste of money and nothing useful will come out of it.  There will be lots of ignored subpoenas too.  Grab some popcorn.

This isn't even about Pelosi it's about finding out the details of who organized an attack on the Capitol. Real Americans deserve more answers.

MLK made change without one single violent attack on the government. He would have never supported what happened on January 6th. And you all are constantly heard because you never shut up. Being heard doesn't mean winning elections.

At this point there is no reason for Cheney or Kinzinger to even respond to what McCarthy or any other Trump Republicans say since they clearly are finished electorally with the Republican Party. On principle it's better to lose your position for telling the truth as opposed to keeping it for co-signing dangerous behavior. If Democrats behaved like Trump did I couldn't remain a part of the party.

I'm glad US Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell isn't walking a beat in the Bronx.  Roll Eyes

This is the hyper-masculine toxicity that makes society so difficult. Who are you to judge him because he was afraid of losing his life? Just because he's a police officer doesn't mean he doesn't feel fear. Any normal human being would have been afraid of a mob.

And if those insurrectionists had been dealing with anybody from the Bronx they would have never got through the doors in the first place.

Maybe this is totally out of line, but something I thought of while watching some clips on Twitter this morning...if he would have any interest (and even aligns this way), should Democrats try to recruit Michael Fanone to run for office? I mean, I'm not sure where he's from originally (if it's not DC, but the accent is difficult to pin down) but he would be a great face for the party and he seems to be genuinely motivated by the horror he went through.

Are you literally trying to push /pol/ to execute daily 1/6s? Because electing cops who were present at 1/6 is how you push /pol/ to execute daily 1/6s.

It would be the end of America.

In what way is electing him incitement of terrorist filth? Because they'll get mad we're not pretending they didn't attempt to overthrow our democracy and assassinate its leaders? "Stand up to us and we'll try to lynch and rape members of your government more?"

The terrorists are already going to try again the next time they lose an election. If they attack earlier because they're offended we're not bending and spreading, genuine Americans will be ready to defend out government and put them down.

We need more patriots in office, instead of terrorist sympathizing Republicans.

Because some people are losing so much faith in America right now that they're considering terrorism in response? Instigating them may not be a smart idea.

Terrorism is never an acceptable response to anything. They didn't lose faith in America, they convinced themselves that their cult leader could not lose and when he did lose they decided to use violence. If they can't accept losing they need to seek professional help, not be appeased by the government.
