Gove is also fascinating- it is forgotten that he was a devout part of the modernising movement around Cameron and while the Cameron set certainly birthed Trussism in a way (spin over substance, a wilful disregard about what cuts to public spending does etc) it equally can be said that Gove comes from the modernising tradition and understands that politics has changed- as it did in the 2000s and as it did now.

From what I can tell, Cameron had brains but not enough guts, and Truss has guts but not enough brains

Apparently Truss' father is not a huge fan of her politics.  Both her parents were fairly left wing and her father is a retired professor of mathematics from University of Leeds.  While not in her riding, I wonder if her father will vote Conservative out of love for daughter or will his opposition to her policies mean he votes Labour?

her mother would be more likely to vote for the Conservatives than her father.

A couple of other selected highlights from the 1922:

One MP has been named as attacking Truss during the meeting: Robert Halfon, who chairs the education select committee, told Truss she had "trashed the last 10 years" of the Conservative economic record, according to one colleague.

I remember when Johnson addressed the 1922 after several rounds of partygate, and while the mood was dire, there were always some MPs who'd come out with a spring in their step, concerns assuaged - and always a few journalists briefing that the mood within the party had rallied.

In contrast, this just sounds dire.

Ah yes, the economic record of poor quality jobs and the slowest productivity growth since WW2.

Are there any good Twitter lists to follow for politics?

Lmao, Andrew Bridgen just said Truss should quit. That should be the final nail in the coffin.

Ouch, Brady must have been showing her all the letters demanding a vote of no confidence. Apparently the number of them could be as high as 100.

EDIT: Actually wasn't Brady at the chambers during the session?

Mixed reports at the moment - but these are the 2022 Conservatives, so I assume we’ll have the full story leaked by the 10pm news.

I'm reading that he left at some point.

Bit off topic, but this explains everything.

At least she didn't put ketchup on her hot dog.

Random question for UK posters: what is the UK football equivalent to the Cleveland Browns?

the Bolton Wanderers?

There's a large discrepancy between the electorate and constituencies on immigration, the former is roughly 50-50 while 75% of the latter are majority immigration skeptics.

Its the mythology that Thatcher was always "resolute" and never ever compromised that is killing the Tories - Truss deployed this fairy story constantly during her fated 50 days as well.

What were some notable compromises of her? I do know that she signed the agreement to return Hong Kong in 1997.

There were lots over time, though they mostly came before the 1987 GE which tells its own story.

An under-remembered one was her declaration that "the NHS is safe with us" at the 1982(?) party conference - some normally sympathetic think tankers and ideologues were far from happy at this.

Out of curiosity, did she ever compromise with any unions?

This guy reduced to pandering to the rubiest rubes in the country so his party clears 150 seats at the next election is so funny.

I think this is more aimed at the party officials gathered for the Conservative Party Conference right now.
