We're almost exactly a year out and the race is about to start. Today confirmation of what's long been an open secret: 3-term incumbent Gerald Tremblay will retire instead of seeking a fourth term. The Liberal MP for Bourassa, Denis Coderre, will announce his candidacy in early November. Dunno if he runs as the candidate of Tremblay's Union Montreal, which has been badly tainted by the Charbonneau Commission hearings thus far. Tremblay will finish his term which expires in January 2014.

Coderre will make his announcement after the Liberal caucus meets this morning.

Dunno if it was tabulated by borough. All I can find are council and borough mayor results. Tremblay was strongest in the core city.

They aren't available in French either- checked the City site, La Presse and French Wiki. I honestly think they were only tabulated at-large.

Coderre might have some fundraiser problems.

That's why he delayed. I'm disgusted by how he's posing as the wronged victim here.

The Lachine councillor who's currently the acting mayor. She'll be elected by the council as interim mayor for the remaining 14 months in this term.

In related news... Coderre could hit some serious flak for his connections.

His plausible deniability was shot to pieces when that tidbit about him being in the room when illegal $$$ was discussed emerged last week. Maybe willfully ignorant of some things but he must've known at least some of what was going on in his own administration.

Yeah, no one really thinks he's personally corrupt.

Coderre's getting hit for his less-than-pristine Rolodex.

Looks like Coderre will have to found a new party. But then again Drapeau's party also imploded when he left. These things are personality cults and not much more. Tongue

Tremblay's PLQ- he used to be a Bourassa minister. UM is mostly PLQ types, VM is led by a Peq, and PM has no affiliation. But no, we don't use explicitly partisan affiliations like in the US or UK.

Applebaum claims he won't run, and anyways the new PLQ-inspired party will be headed by Coderre.

UM continues to crumble.

Coderre will announce on May 17, the 371st anniversary of the city's founding. Also opens up his Bourassa seat.

Wow. I hate municipal party names.

Union/Vision/Projet Montreal are hardly original either. Wink Drapeau era had more with Civic/MCM/MAG.

Coderre enters tomorrow. Should be interesting to see how many big names, if any, he recruited for his slate.

This page should be renamed so we can discuss the rest of Quebec as well.

As you wish. Despite the new parties and faces, alignment hasn't really changed in Montreal. Coderre's the heir to UM, PM is still around and Cote is endorsed by Vision. The more things change and all that.
