So there are 5 options for democrats I see:

1. Run Biden anyway

2. Open primary: have Biden announce he won't seek re-election and let others run

3. Have Biden not run, cancel the primaries and have the party decide the nominee behind close doors.

4. Biden drops out during the primaries, his delegates become unpledged and can vote for any person

5. National primary: Biden drops out during the primaries. Dems void the previous contests and set a date for a national primary vote, giving candidates a small window to campaign, winner of this first of its kind primary is the nominee.

Run Biden anyway.

Is that a serious question lol? Fundamentals are quite solid for him .

One or two. Preferably one as I don't trust the Democratic base or the donors to nominate a good candidate.

Deciding the nominee behind closed doors would be the fastest speedrun to lose a Presidential election. If Biden were to not seek a 2nd term, it would probably be Wes Moore who announces and wins via black support in the south. I don't think Kamala Harris would be able to beat him.

Back your incumbent.

The polls suggest Kamela would do better.. but I given she's been virtually anonymous for the last 3 years, I don't think that would reflect in a presidential campaign.

#1. But Biden needs to start campaigning and get better on messaging. His campaign needs to get started big time in the coming weeks.

It's too late for #2. I voted for unpledged delegates because at least the convention would be fun and would avoid both the smoke-filled rooms and candidates having to organize national campaigns at short notice, and since these are Biden delegates you'd probably end up with a candidate broadly agreeable to the Biden electorate anyway. Possibly the highest risk highest reward option.

We have to live or die by Biden.

The OP left out option 6: take the Republicans at their word. Have Harris declare Biden President, deploy the military to quell protests, and have groups of angry left-wing rioters bring vigilante justice to GOP leadership  - that is all "legitimate political discourse" according to the Republican National Committee.

Run Biden, have him die right before the convention and a major crisis. Harris gets a chance to do something presidential and get sympathy vote over Biden's death. In October, she announces support for national weed legalization.

Harris actually does better than Biden in the NYT/Siena poll. I can understand why; I am one of the voters who has a better opinion of Harris than Biden. Harris probably doesn't bleed anywhere near as much minority support as Biden, for example (given her better performances in AZ/NV/GA).

#2 by far. Biden should not be running for reelection and options 3-5 are just silly.
The notion that it’s too late to run a primary campaign is absurd.  Super Tuesday is in four months.  Many other countries hold entire national campaigns in six weeks.  Lyndon Johnson dropped out after the NH primary in 1968 and there was still a vigorous and competitive primary campaign after that.

The time for Biden to withdraw was three months ago. That horse has bolted and it's not coming back. This fantasy that people have of Whitmer, Newsom or even Harris riding in on a white horse to save the Democratic Party is just that: a fantasy. Harris and Newsom are both ambitious politicians who clearly have their eyes on the White House. They will spend months ripping each other to shreds while Trump cruises through.

There is no white horse situation here, and there never was, so stop wallowing in your own self-righteousness and lock and f**king load.

Ignore the "polling" and run a campaign based on issues.

The time to try to replace Biden (particularly if he’s not willingly stepping down) has long past, and the most likely alternatives to Biden could easily do worse than him.

#1, but if "behind closed doors" were an option, that would be great, especially if it were permanent. Exorcise the ghost of McGovern. Voted #3.

Completely agree. McGovern ruined the Democratic Party nomination process. Why they even stuck with his ridiculous primary system after the man lost 49 states to Richard Nixon is beyond me. He should have been completely discredited after that.

Of course, it's too late now, unfortunately. The current system has been around for too long. The backlash to the Democrats going "anti-democratic" would be immense. That's why those floodgates never should have been opened.

It would be anti-democratic.
