HC clearly.

It's a shame they had to ruin things after winning their hard-fought battle for their deserved independence, things would be better off if they had never got their independence.

Such a shame since it was doing so well for the first few years after its independence.

I wouldn't count on that. I would count on things being even worse than they are now in the remainder of Ethiopia, though.

The true message is: Things would be better if they had got their independence a different way. People who win wars against all odds - and rarely has a war been won against greater odds - don't tend to be decent. Or remotely sane.

I know it's a bad dictatorship and everything, but what about Eritrea makes it especially horrid?

It's Africa's version of North Korea. Extremely totalitarian (Reporters Without Borders actually ranks it BELOW North Korea in press freedom) one-party state (Eritrea has never had an election, not even a joke election, the government keeps "postponing" it with various excuses), extremely militarized, has the second highest percentage of citizens in the military after North Korea that can't get along with any of its neighbors (Despite only being independent since 1993, it's already been in three border wars) and the US State Department is rather close to adding it to its list of state sponsors of terrorism due to possible support for Islamists in Somalia. The ruling party by the way is probably the most misnamed party in the world: People's Front for Democracy and Justice.

A real shame because it's got really cool scenery:

Freedom House gives them a 7,6 rating which is slightly better than the 7,7 rating that a few countries have including its neighbors Sudan and Somalia. In fact, Kenya is the closest country that has better than a 5,5, they're all pretty miserable over there.

But, anyways, obviously this is yet another country that would have made more sense to invade than Iraq.

If your goal is restoring Isaias' popularity.
