It's the populist wing of the Democratic party vs. the Libertarian wing of the Democratic party.

If a national health care system and repealing tax cuts represent the Libertarian wing of the Democratic Party...

His health care plan was minimal compared to most of his opponents.
He'd raise taxes to balance the budget. He's a fiscal conservative,  he balanced the Vermont budget year after year, even though it's the one state that doesn't require a balanced budget.

Vermont allows anyone to carry a concealled gun - it's a pretty libertarian state.

I voted Dean/Dean.  Byrd would win if he weren't so old and feeble though.

Dean/Byrd.

To jfern:
Lots of states don't require balanced budgets, check California.

Dean/Dean

These days an open racist and former KKK member could not win the presidency.

Only Santorum and Lott are worse than Byrd.

Oh so now Santorum is a racist? Is that what you're saying?

Dean/Byrd

Byrd is more populist and would win all the Bush states.

Dean/Dean. The whole KKK thing kills Byrd.

Dean/Byrd.

The KKK thing would scare many voters, including me. But he'd take the deep south, easily, as well as probably states like Ohio. He's more appealing than Dean there.

Byrd/Byrd.

Byrd actually voted for the anti-gay marriage amendment.  Smiley

He'd never run for President though, he's still got many pork appropriations for WV to get through the Senate.

Dean was never a conservative in any matters, except for gun control.  And he changed that when he needed to run for the Dem nomination.

Dean actually was pretty Libertarian in Vermont...that annoyed many progressives. But he ran as more liberal nationwide.

Running as a hardcore liberal in a national election and then running as a moderate in Vermont is...err...an interesting strategy.

He actually did run for President in 1976. But only in WV*... and it was basically a cover for his run for Majority Leader

*He won over 60% o/c
