Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapses on field, AED and CPR used, cannot breathe, game paused

Absolutely horrific, especially for someone so young.  My most heartfelt thoughts with him and his family.  

From my limited knowledge about sports medicine and the circumstances, may be a case of something called commotio cordis.  It's something I've read about in baseball and lax players where a sudden and violent hit to the chest during a very specific part of the cardiac cycle throws the heart into v-fib (irregular heart rhythm).  

It's extremely rare, the window for it to happen during the one-second cardiac cycle is incredibly tiny -- think of it like trying to throw a dart at a dot on a target that's zooming by.  

Again that's just me being an armchair physician, I obviously don't know anything about his medical history.  And regardless of the cause, this is absolutely awful.

Hamlin’s agent tells CNN the Bills player is awake and has been holding hands with family

Damar Hamlin’s agent Ron Butler told CNN the injured Buffalo Bills player is awake and has been holding hands with family in the hospital.

The Buffalo Bills earlier said that Hamlin has "shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours" and "has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact."

Damar Hamlin asked who won Bills-Bengals game after waking up in ICU, doctors say

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has shown what physicians treating him are calling "remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours," the team announced Thursday, three days after the player went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the field.

Dr. Timothy Pritts said in a conference call that neurological signs of improvement began Wednesday night as Hamlin gradually woke up, with the rest of his body healing. Hamlin was able to communicate by writing; he cannot speak because of a breathing tube in his throat.

"Last night he was able to emerge and follow commands and even asked who had won the game," Pritts said.

"The answer is yes, Damar, you won the game of life," Pritts said.

The game was suspended after Hamlin collapsed and it hasn't been determined if or when it will resume – though sources inside the NFL tell the Associated Press that the league will not resume the game.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin released from hospital 7 days after collapse

Damar Hamlin was released from the hospital on Monday, a week after the Buffalo Bills safety’s heart stopped and he had to be resuscitated on the field during an NFL game, Dr. William A. Knight said Monday during a video news conference.

Knight said he went with Hamlin to the airport, where he took a flight to Buffalo. Hamlin is in a hospital there, the doctor from the UC Medical Center in Cincinnati said.

“He is doing well and this is the beginning of the next stage of his recovery,” Knight said. “It is entirely too premature to discuss, not only his football; it’s that we’re really focused on his day-to-day recovery.”
