Don't vote if you haven't seen both movies, because that's dumb.

The earlier one. The one that came out last year is so obviously inferior that I figured it wouldn't be an interesting question.

The Dark Knight, though I think The Dark Knight Rises was better than both. The Avengers was a rip-off of Transformers 3 that got way too much hype for being so woefully mediocre.

The Avengers knew what it was and had fun with it. The Nolan Batman trilogy was quite good overall, but at times took itself too seriously (for God's sake, it's about a rich guy in a bat costume fighting an anarchist clown and a bodybuilder with a mask.).

I found The Avengers to be boring outside of the chemistry of the actors themselves.   There were no stakes and everything was pretty contrived.  I never felt like anybody important, good or bad, was in any real danger and never really understood what was at stake.

The Dark Knight is perfection for the genre.  The tone, the music, the action.  It's the longest movie I've seen where I wasn't bored by a single scene.

TDKR was also contrived and I didn't like it as much, but I still enjoyed it more than The Avengers.

You mean the one with Sean Connery or the one from the 60s?

The Avengers didn't even have much of a plot beyond "Loki comes to Earth and tries to take it over, and the Avengers assemble to stop him."

Agreed. Although you don't look for a plot in action movies, TDK is the perfect mix of plot and action.

The interesting part comes not from the basic premise (which is what you said), but from how they assemble, and more importantly the group conflicts/dynamics. It's fun and light-hearted but still fairly well-written by action movie standards. Certainly it's more intelligent than the Transformers films.

I'd hope one would aim for a higher standard than that.

The Avengers was a well done blockbuster and entertaining for what it was, but what it was was nothing but escapist and somewhat silly entertainment. It could've just as easily been made in the 90s, back when comic book movies were made primarily for kids and teenagers, unlike today where they are actually made primarily for adults.
