If a merger happened  c. 1990, There would probably be a Liberal/Democrat merger, but not a Republican/PC merger.  However, a number of New England Republicans and Southern/Reagan Democrats would switch to the PC, if it could play its cards right.  Of course considering we are talking about the Progressive Conservative party, that may be too much to hope for.
